Wine Cocktails You Can Create At Home

Filed under: Wine Spirits — Tags: — CakeAuthor @ 5:33 am

There will be times when you have too many wine bottles crammed into your cupboard and you will have to start using them up. If you can’t imagine downing all of them in one go, consider converting them into cocktail (such as white wine sangria) so that you have a refreshing summer drink in the afternoons as soon as you get home from work. During winter, you can also choose to create warm mulled wines by heating the wine steeped in spices— another good way to welcome you in from work.

Red wine is usually the more common variety that is used for sangria concoctions. But other kinds of wine can also be used to make sangria if you are not particularly keen on red wine. A lot of people are not venturing into new kinds, particularly the white wine version. It is almost akin to a sparkling wine version with fruits and your favorite liqueur added in. The basic ingredients aside from the wine are fruits, sugar, and possibly a citrusy liqueur like Cointreau or Limoncello. There are many sangria recipes you can find online, and you can start with these if you’ve never made sangria before. As soon as you become more confident in your mixing abilities, you can start dabbling with different wines and varying concentrations of liqueurs and fruits too. You would really have to do some experimenting if you want to discover the perfect white wine sangria for you.

Mulled wine is another homemade wine preparation that is a great favorite among people who live in place that experience a really cold winter each year. When you’ve been out walking home in the cold, you will truly appreciate having this concoction handed to you as soon as you enter the door; its soothing tastes of fruit and spice will warm you up really quickly. Just like sangria, mulled wine recipes abound online, as different households usually have different recipes which have been passed on from generations before.

Although there are now ready-prepared bottles you can purchase from the wine shops, there’s no point in buying white wine sangria or mulled wine if you have all those wine bottles sitting there. By mixing to come up with your own version, you can come up with certain unique flavors that will suit your palate more.

Can Sonoma Top A Napa Cabernet?

There is no doubt that Sonoma and Napa wines are praised worldwide and have put American wines on the map. Both of these areas have unique climatic and geographic strengths that make them excellent for wine.

Napa is fairly small in comparison to Sonoma. It only runs 34 miles north and west. Its vineyards run just about totally north to south down the spine of the valley. Despite its small size, Napa gives just over four hundred acres to the vine. Sonoma is just about twice the size of Napa and has well over four hundred acres planted with vineyards.

Sonoma’s strength can be found in her sub regions (known as AVAs) that display an alarming array of microclimates. The existence of these microclimates permits producers to grow and make quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel. There exist warm and dry sub regions, like Dry Creek Valley and Knights Valley (actually simply a climatic and geographic extension of Napa Valley), and cool and damp climates, such as Russian River Valley and its sub region Chalk Hill.

Ocean breezes and fog help chill the latter two regions, allowing Sonoma wine makers to provide impressive examples of the fussy Pinot Noir. Knights Valley, because of its soil, which is both rocky and gravelly, and warm climate, is perfect for raising high-quality Cabernet. Sonoma County’s Green Valley and Los Carneros (a sub region shared with its rival Napa) are ideal for producing quality grapes for sparkling wines. Sonoma Valley, while excellent for Cabernet, is also well-suited to Zinfandel because of her dry and warm conditions and her ability to beat off mist that would make a mold and rot problem for Zinfandel.

Napa’s climate and geographic strength is her climatic progression, of cool and damp conditions in the south to hot and dry conditions in the north, and an array of soil types, from gravel and low fertility in the north to clay and silt in the south. While she doesn’t have Sonoma’s diversity in micro climates, Napa does have a decent range of soils and elevation that certainly influences the fruit she produces.

Like in Sonoma, Los Carneros allows for sparkling wine production in Napa. While Howell Mountain, Oakville, and Rutherford all create almost all of the region’s award winning and high class Cabernets. Napa Cabernet, in fact, is what made this American region so famous.

Beer Brewing History And Statistics

Beer Brewing History And Statistics

Beer brewing is an ancient process that dates back 5000 years to Mesopotamia. But it was all homebrewing until the first brewery production unit popped up in 1040 AD in Germany. Today there are 1,700 breweries in the United States and the retail sales of all their beers generate over $91.6 billion each year.

But the industry didn’t just grow up overnight. Native American Indians were already making their own beers before the Pilgrims turned up in the Mayflower with European techniques. The nation’s first commercial brewery was established in 1632 in New York. The oldest surviving brewery company in the US to-date was established in 1829.

Somewhere in the 1840s and 1850s, America’s taste for beers moved from the ales and porters preferred by the English to the lagers brought over by German immigrants. By 1850, there were at least 450 breweries. But the market has always been in the grip of a few major breweries and distributors.

As of now, three brewing and distribution companies own 79 percent or nearly 4/5th of the 205.8 million barrels produced and sold each year. This barrel count covers 85 percent of all US sales of alcoholic drinks. Light beers sell more than pale lagers, accounting for 52.8 percent of the market.

The most popular brand on the market accounts for 28.3 percent of all beers sold in the country. The second most popular light beer accounts for 9.9 percent, and only one or two imported brands are considered popular. But this dominance of a few big brands may not last long. Ever since homebrewing was declared legal in 1978, the trend has been shifting steadily towards craft beers from microbreweries, brewpubs and regional producers.

Beer brewing kits and homebrewing supplies can now be ordered for home delivery, so the process is a lot easier compared to how the Mesopotamians had to do it. The system comes with how-to DVDs, reusable fermenters with taps and readymade hopped malt extract boosters. New brewers can easily produce about 2 gallons in as little as 14 days. Click here: hops

The Wine Industry Of Southern Italy

What sort of wine should a producer spend cash and time making? Should he produce an international-style wine, a wine that Robert Parker would like and would then promote? This begs the question: What is an international-style wine?

Some purists would suggest that modern techniques used worldwide that are now in use in Southern Italy have already done the damage and thus all ensuing wine can only be of the international style. Simply put, international-style wines are those that are fruit-forward on the nose and palate, with supple tannins, aged in oak barriques, and that do not take ten or twenty years to age before being able to drink. This is the New-World style wine that many say Robert Parker enjoys.

Many producers are making mixes of native and international varietals which now conjure up names such as “Super Sicilians” and “New Style Campania.” The resulting wines are weighty, extremely saturated, inky, and heavy on fruit and oak, and thus miss one of the key parts of a top-class wine: these wines simply lack nuance and refinement because they are so unrestrained and imbalanced. They are built to gain market attention because they play by market rules, not because they play by their own rules/customs.

In Campania, as an example, one can find Fianos and Grecos with high leftover saccharide levels, and Taurasis that include a fair amount of Merlot in addition to the normal Aglianico. Aglianico del Vulture is nothing but Aglianico, while in Sicily a Nero d’Avola can be mistaken for a Cabernet. These wines are produced, in part, with the help from wine specialists like Michel Rolland and Northern Italian Riccardo Cotarella, folk who’ve no real appreciation of the South’s wines. The sole region which has not compromised its wines is Basilicata.

It has to be recognized that because Southern Italy’s climate has more in common with Australia and California than with Northern Italy, Southern producers should seriously consider the success of those wine producing regions. That goes beyond what varietals to plant and may also include learning their promoting strategies. Nonetheless for the producers who do take some time to find out which varietals will work well in certain vineyards, paying careful scrutiny to micro-climates, terroir, and climate, the results have been rather rewarding and the soul of Southern wine has not been lost. Librandi is one of those producers who is leading the way, but money and influence from the North and elsewhere still control the landscape, at least at present.

Nic Haegeli still regards himself fairly new to the wine business, but he now has several years of experience as a wine manager at Colonial Spirits, an Acton liquor store. With a BA in History and a Master of Public Policy in International Relations, Nic never visualized himself working with wine. Producing A Wine Of Terroir

Clearly the landscape of Italy’s Southern wine industry is changing. With the arriving of Northern corporations, the South is being challenged with new management scheme. The newbies have brought with them modern management, worldwide commercial networks, and worldwide experience in both marketing and wine development. This new approach to the business of wine is causing a major quake in the provincial south.

How is a small-time quality producer to take on a massive establishment or a rival who makes wine with the help of the illustrious Mr. Rolland? The rules of competition have therefore changed and the conventional producer is left with two main choices: learn from their new neighbours about the way to make and market their wine, or disregard the potent new entrants and continue making their own wines. But in any case, globalization has set in, as even the latter group has taken to making wines from international varietals.

Italy’s Southern wine industry is being modernised and is entering the world wine market. For example, of the the Italian wine that is imported, Germany (only bulk wine) and France (for bulk wine for mixing) both import 32 % and 25 percent respectively. Naturally, these numbers include all wines from Italy, but nevertheless this bodes well for the South. Its wines are receiving attention and are being sold.

In Apulia, one finds balanced, dry and sweet, red, white, and rose wine, including the great Castel del Monte DOC, Salentino, and Primitivo. But the region is still trying to create a name for worldclass wines, even if they are of good worth. In Campania, Ciro is creating a name for itself using modern strategies that have reduced the percentage of alcohol and the danger of oxidization resulting in a rounded wine with masses of fresh fruit, bouquet, and acidity. Sicily supplies the wine lover with masses of options. One may continue to find superbly made Marsalas and Moscatos, but will also discover delicately bone-dry whites and both fragile and forceful reds like Nero d’Avola, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir.

Additionally, DOC wine production is growing and has increased dramatically over the last couple of years. The South now has its first DOCG wine, Taurasi from Campania. The very same Taurasi is now being touted by some as the “Barolo of the South.”

It is clear that the six regions of the South are facing a wine revolution. Their wines are gaining momentum on the market and can’t be ignored. The challenge for the winemaker goes past what varietals to cultivate, where to plant them, what kind of wine to make, and how to market them.

The most difficult challenge for the Southern producer is plausibly simple: manufacturing a wine of terroir. A wine that is true to the soil, the climate, the culture, and the region, not just a wine that will sell or gain high marks from a renowned wine journalist, while somehow incorporating the advantages that come with the modernisation of viniculture and viticulture. This is the challenge, and the solution to this challenge will take time, cash, and lots of experiments.
