Tackle Historic Pizza Places In New York

New York is famous for its thin crust pizza. However, where did it start? Italian immigrants brought pizza to New York in the late 1800s. It still took a little longer before the first pizzeria opened up on the streets of New York. It started with Lombardi’s Grocery. In 1905, it is documented that Gennaro Lombardi took out a license for the first pizzeria in Little Italy. Slowly, his grocery store turned into a full time pizzeria that sold pizza by the slice or by the whole pie.

 

Antonio Totonno Pero worked for Lombardi’s before branching off to establish his own pizzeria in 1924. He opened up in Coney Island and the restaurant stood there until a fire gutted it in 2009. It is still in the process of being rebuilt. In the meantime, Totonno’s is still serving New York today at two different locations. They are famous for their coal burning pizza ovens.

 

The next big pizzeria to open in New York belonged to John Sasso. John’s Pizzeria opened up just as the Great Depression was taking hold, but it survived to become one of the best-loved pizza restaurants in the West Village.

 

What do these restaurants have in common? They all use Old World pizza recipes that came from Italy with the immigrants. Many of them still sell the classic Margherita pizza and the traditional tomato pizza that does not have any cheese. This is what New Yorkers have grown up with over the past century.
