It’s National Pork Month over in America in October, so I thought we should remind ourselves of all the ways we can cook and prepare this fine meat. pork and get more of it into our own diets.

 

These days pork is only 4% fat.. The fat content of pork is actually only about 4%.! There arenumerous pork recipes available both online and in cookery books to make sure it stays tasty too.

 

Although pork is much leaner than it once was, we must still make sure it’s cooked properly. Here are a few pork recipes and serving suggestions to get you started:

 

Grill it!

The best pork loin recipe involves grilling your pork to keep it nice and healthy. Dry rub it with tarragon and basil to add flavour first.

The Better The Ingredients, The Better The Dish

A trend is gathering pace across the country. More and more people are growing their own vegetables and even raising their own livestock for a homelier take on their favourite pork,poultry and lamb dishes.

At the forefront of this revolution in food have been celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay and, perhaps most notably, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall. Increasingly large numbers of people have been inspired to start rearing their own meat watching Hugh’s River Cottage series.

However, this is not always practical. Urban dwellers often struggle to find the space for a vegetable garden, let alone a small barnyard of animals!

Wonderful farmers markets, butchers and grocers up and down the country sell quality produce. The tastiest beef, lamb, poultry and pork recipes will instantly be improved by using better quality meat.

It doesn’t have to be expensive either. The cuts that you buy can be mixed up - more expensive cuts like pork fillet are delicious but so are cheaper but equally tasty cuts such as belly pork.

Some people can be a little bit intimidated walking into a butchers but the butcher has a lifetime of expertise and product knowledge and can really help you choose the perfect cut for any occasion.

Try making the Cajun pork recipe below using good quality pork fillet. It takes just half an hour to prepare and is delicious.

Pre heat your oven to 180°C and season your pork fillet with two table spoons of Cajun spice. Place your pork in the oven and leave it to cook for 25 minutes to half an hour.

Whilst this is cooking, peel about 2 pounds (900g) of sweet potatoes and boil until nice and soft. Mash the sweet potato and add low fat fromage frais and spring onion before generously seasoning with black pepper.

For the final 15 minutes that your pork is cooking, place some honey drizzled pineapple rings alongside the pork fillet in the oven.

In just half an hour from start to finish you have a beautifully spiced dish.

From Dancing To Sausages

Craig Revel Horwood is best known as the toughest talking of the Strictly Come Dancing judges. His sometimes painfully honest critiques of the celebrity hopefuls’ efforts have had millions glued to their screens come Saturday night.

However, it has been announced that Revel Horwood is to lend his considerable judging ability to a meatier mission. The pork community is readying itself for fireworks as the dancing guru starts his quest to find Britain’s Star Sausage.

From the 1st November, the judge will sample pork recipes from across the country until his perfect banger is found.

To celebrate the start of his search, and the great British sausage itself of course, there are a number of dance themed pork recipes. With not a pork fillet nor roast pork in sight, the simple majesty of the sausage is being celebrated.

The dishes boast a range of cosmopolitan influences with inspiration drawn from across the globe. Meals ranging from sausage strudels to Spanish inspired sausage tapas prove the diversity of pork, and the sausage in particular.

There is, though, much more to pork than just the sausage, wonderfully tasty though those are.

There are a plethora of different pork recipes available whether its breatfast, lunch or dinner. Loads of celebs have shared their favourite pork recipes, showing their love of pork.

Among the many dishes submitted is a fantastic recipe for roast pork from Phil Vickery, former captain of the England rugby team. Served with a lovely oregano, orange and white wine sauce, the meal is a delicious update on a classic.

Both entirely delicious and easy to make, this recipe is a must. Preheating the oven to 180°C, season a lean pork joint with salt, pepper and oil. This will have to be cooked for roughly half an hour per pound and an extra half an hour.

Once it is cooked, remove your roast pork from the oven and let it stand for about 20 minutes while you make your sauce.

Tip off the fat from your roasting tray then add a large glass of white wine. Once this has been brought to the boil add a stock cube, 275ml of orange juice, 2 tea spoons of caster sugar and oregano. Reduce this slightly then add cornflour with a little cold water. This will thicken up straight away.

You are then ready to serve up a delicious, easy meal.

Prime Minister Of Cambodia Tells The Nation To Eat Pork

It might seem a bit odd for a prime minister of a country to be promoting pork but this is what is currently happening in Cambodia. Hun Sen has been forced to take this action due to a sudden decrease in the number of people eating pork across the country. Khmer people have no moral objection to eating the meat; in fact up until recently it was widely used and is part of many national dishes. The main reason why they are now deciding not to eat this meat is due to ‘blue ear pig disease’ and the fear surrounding it.

 

There have been scores of epidemics across Asia since 1991 and blue ear pig disease has been blamed for these. This year has been particularly bad for the people of Cambodia as the country seems to have been hit hard by it. This arterivirus tends to attack the lungs of pigs and can rapidly destroy whole herds and spread out of control. There have been many claims that this disease is unlikely to cross over the humans but it is understandable that people are concerned. It is this fear that is turning people off eating pork in places like Cambodia. This problem is not exclusive to Cambodia however; in Vietnam there have been many cases reported and the number of pigs reported to have been killed by the disease already has reached 50,000.

 

But the people of Cambodia are being urged to start eating pork again and not to be afraid to eat it by their Prime Minister. He insists that so long as they cook it properly there is need to worry. However, there has been a ban on the import of pigs to the country until they are sure the problem is fully under control. But it might be a while before things get back to the way they were because Cambodia relies heavily on neighbouring countries for its supply of pork.

The Story Of The Pork Sausage

What would the British breakfast be without the pork sausage? This is a firm favourite for many of us and this is something that we have been eating for many generations. In fact the first sausages came into existence over two thousand years ago. However if you were offered one of these sausages from way back then, the taste might not do much for you; over the many years, we have perfected the sausage with all the latest technology and ingredients to give us the tasty sausage that sits on many of our plates today.

 

‘Salsus’ is the Latin word for salted and this is where the word ’sausage’ actually comes from. Obviously there were no ways to refrigerate things in ancient times so in order to preserve these pork sausages, a lot of salt would be used and that is where the name came from. The sausage became very popular originally because it was meat that people could store for a while without it becoming rotten. In some hotter countries they developed the dry sausage which was created by laying the meat out in the sun.

 

In the UK we have lots of regions that are famous for their sausages; places like Cumberland, Lincolnshire, Wiltshire, and Berkshire. There are many sausages lovers who have a particular favourite when it comes to sausages and they will only eat this type of sausage.
